First things first I'm going to mention some equipment that we use when using Pat Parelli's Natural Horsemanship.

We have what is called a Carrot Stick. The carrot stick is indeed a small stick that is normally orange but can also be found in white. The stick is about 4 feet long. Attached to the carrot stick is what is called a Savvy String. This string or rope is about 6 feet long. In many ways the carrot stick is used as an extension of your arm. It is NOT to be used as a whip or longe line type excercise. Also, we have special halters and a lead rope that is about 12ft long.

Pat Parelli really likes to say that we are "playing" with our horses not working with them. We want to make sure they are enjoying themselves and learning as they go along. We really have to watch out for "making" the horse do something and "letting" the horse.
Natural Horsemanship is all about connecting with your horse and using the natural instincts and behaviors of the horse to teach him certain maneuvers. I still am just a beginner and have just barely started to fully understand different parts of these training excercises. To learn more go to http://www.parelli.com/ the official website.
